Professional Qualifications What is the process with the IAT?

We are an Affiliate of Engineering Council and have an approved agreement with the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) to use their CEng/IEng/Engtech process for our members.

We have a team of approved IAT assessors who evaluate the portfolio of evidence and carry out assessment according to the CIHT methodology. CIHT carry out the administration service. Fees are according to the CIHT requirements, there is an extra over for IAT members to cover the extra administration however the IAT is happy to cover this cost for its members.

The joint branded guidance for members is still under development however you can begin the process using the CIHT documentation. The first step is to request that the CIHT carry out an evaluation of your qualifications to see if you meet the requirements for the standard process. Click the button below:

The Autumn submission date is the 16th August, Interviews held 7-11 October.

Requirements
Requirements for each of the levels available are shown below, with relevant links to the Engineering Council website for each qualification.
   

EngTech registration is open to anyone who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment. 

Typically, applicants will have successfully completed an Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship or other work based learning programme approved by their professional engineering institution. This can lead directly to Engineering Technician registration. 

Or, alongside appropriate working experience, they will hold:

  • a qualification, approved by a licensed professional engineering institution, in engineering or construction set at level 3 (or above) in the Qualifications and Credit Framework/National Qualifications Framework for England and Northern Ireland; or at level 6 (or above) in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework; or at level 3 (or above) in the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales;

The IEng title is open to anyone who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment, as set out in the professional standard UK-SPEC. Individuals generally develop this through education and working experience. 

The application process for IEng registration is more straightforward for those with exemplifying academic qualifications. For IEng this is one of the following:

  • An accredited Bachelors or honours degree in engineering or technology
  • An accredited HNC or HND in engineering or technology (for programmes started before Sept 1999)
  • An HNC or HND started after Sept 1999 (but before Sept 2010 in the case of the HNC) or a Foundation Degree in engineering or technology, plus appropriate further learning to degree level
  • An NVQ4 or SVQ4 that has been approved for the purpose by a licensed engineering institution, plus appropriate further learning to degree level

The CEng title is open to anyone who can demonstrate the required professional competences and commitment, as set out in the professional standard UK-SPEC.  Individuals generally develop these through education and working experience. 

The application process for CEng registration is more straightforward for those with exemplifying academic qualifications.  For CEng this is one of the following: 

  • A Bachelors degree, with Honours, in engineering or technology, accredited for CEng, plus an appropriate and accredited Masters degree or Engineering Doctorate (EngD), or appropriate further learning to Masters level
  • An accredited integrated MEng degree
