More details | Abstract: The collaborative project was funded by Highways England, Mineral Products Associations and Eurobitume UK and was specifically aimed for reviewing bitumen based surfacing materials, drawing upon international experience, with the view to developing new asphalt surfacing materials which offer enhancement to durability, whilst balancing other performance demands such as noise and safety. AECOM led the project delivery team and completed a successful international workshop and construction of demonstration trials on two sets of the next generation asphalt surfacing materials. These materials comprised modification to Clause 943 polymer modified hot rolled asphalt and a bespoke performance based polymer modified Premium Asphalt Surfacing System (PASS). The mix design principle for these materials is based on a low voided, dense body, durable asphalt material with improved surface characteristics (low noise and good macrotexture). During the laboratory and field assessments, the test results were benchmarked against those expected for Clause 942 thin surface course systems. This presentation details the mix design, construction and road trials experience, including recommendations for the implementation of these materials on the Strategic Road Network in England. |
